Bound By A Common Thread

by Charlie Reitze

Unforgettable stories of people who lived off the grid in the backwoods of Maine.

To meet these people, I lived out of “Festus,” my Toyota pickup truck and a leaky tent, roamed the state of Maine three times, snowshoed across Grand Lake Matagamon, rode a snowmobile along the mountainous roads of Coburn Gore, canoed eighteen miles up Chesuncook Lake, hiked the mountains of Monson, was backed up to one man’s front door by a vicious, growling, teeth-baring dog in Waldoboro, walked two miles through mosquito-infested swale in Roque Bluffs, and slept on a roofed picnic table during a violent thunderstorm at Chemquasabamticook (Ross) Lake. As Tom Brown once said, “There is a Spirit that moves in all things.” I will always believe that it was guiding my footsteps throughout this book. One of my professors called it serendipity. Each of the people you will meet in the pages of this book has a common thread or lifestyle that links them together. They have found peace living close to the earth, and each, in his or her own way, has shared that peace with me – and here, in this book, with you.

REVIEWS & COMMENTS

“I didn’t make it through the first six pages without getting choked up. In fact, it took me straight back to the day I sat across from my friend Charlie Reitze in his tiny cabin on the Canadian border, middle of nowhere Maine. Four people, one camera, one microphone, and two sets of lights were all that were there. We had a generator running as far away from the cabin as possible to run the equipment without it interfering with the sound. Interviewing Charlie about his time in Vietnam, and his life after, changed me forever. He was never the same after his service, and I have never been the same since he allowed me the honor of listening to him share what he did that day. It was sacred space then, and will always be in my heart. And this book…already can’t put it down and still just in the prologue.”Kelly Sutton Blaine, Author, Interviewer
